Drilling waste recycling System Working



The process of drilling oil and gas wells generates large volumes of drill cuttings and used muds. Onshore and offshore operators have employed a variety of methods for managing these drilling wastes. In offshore, options are limited to cuttings reinjection, offshore discharge and transportation to onshore disposal facility. This is as a result of the limited space and stringent environmental regulations governing an offshore drilling operation. As a result some offshore wastes have to be transported to an onshore facility for treatment and disposal. Onshore operations however, have a wider waste management options. The selection of a disposal method for a particular location depends on other factors which must be evaluated extensively before implementation. The main aim should be towards ensuring an environmentally safe waste disposal approaches.

The solids control system forms the first waste management practice in any drilling operation. It removes drill cuttings from the drilling mud at the surface just before the mud re-enters the mud-pit for recirculation. Apart from drill cuttings, the solids control equipment also removes some gases and other contaminants in the mud before they are re-circulated. The early removal of these solids avoids accumulation and clogging of the system and the separation devices sizes of solids. The components of the solids control system will depend upon the types of drilling fluid used, these formations being drilled, the available equipment on the rig, and the specific requirements of the disposal option. But basically, standard solid control equipment will comprise of shale shakers, degassers, desanders and desilters. The mud passes over a shale shaker, which is basically a vibrating screen. This removes the larger particles, while allowing the residue to pass into settling tanks. The finer particles are further removed in the desanders and desilters. If the mud contains gas from the formation it will be passed through a degasser which separates the gas from liquid mud.

Cutting reinjection is common to both offshore and onshore operations. However, due to the availability of space for an onshore operation, there are a lot more management options available. The most common onshore disposal method is perhaps onsite burial. Other methods include the construction of a waste reserve pit, thermal methods like incineration, kilns, open burning etc. There are also biological methods like composting, land-spreading, land-farming etc. In an onshore environment, waste can be treated and used for other beneficial applications like road spreading, construction materials etc. This section explores the various options available for onshore waste treatment and disposal.

The purpose of using mud gas separator


The main purpose of a mud gas separator is to vent the gas and save the drilling fluid. This is important not only economic reasons, but also to minimise the risk of circulating out a gas kick without having to shut down to mix additional mud volume.
In some situations the amount of mud lost can be critical when surface volume is marginal and on-site mud supplies are limited. When a gas kick is properly shut in and circulated out, the mud gas separator should be capable of saving most of the mud.


The atmospheric type separator operates on the gravity or hydrostatic pressure principle.

Eight general rules to assure shale shakers will work properly and remove cuttings



1. The shale shaker should be run continuously while circulating. Cuttings cannot be separated if the shaker bed is not in motion.

2. Fluid should cover most of the screen. If only one quarter or one third of the screen is covered, the screen is too coarse and should be replaced with a finer screen.

3. If fluid flows through a hole or tear, cuttings are not removed. Any screen with a hole or tear should be replaced immediately. With a panel screen, the hole or tear can be plugged.

4. Shaker screen replacements should be made as quickly as possible. Minimize downtime by planning your work. Locate and arrange tools and screens before starting. If possible, get help. This will decrease the amount of cuttings being kept in the mud because the shaker is not running. If possible, change screens during a connection. In critical situations, drilling may be interrupted and the pumps stopped while the screen is replaced.

5. Dilution fluid (water or oil) should not be added in the possum belly or on the shaker screen. Dilution fluid should be added downstream. Dilution-fluid (even water) additions should be metered or otherwise measured.

6. Except for cases of lost circulation (when it is necessary to retain lost circulation material), the shaker should not be bypassed, not even for a short time.

7. Large cuttings should be removed from the possum belly when mud is not being circulated. If the possum belly is dumped into the sand trap just before making a bit or wiper trip, the sand trap should also be cleaned. Otherwise, when fluid circulation starts after a trip, the large cuttings dumped into the sand trap will likely move down the pit system and plug desilters or desanders. Note: The possum belly and/ or sand trap is not always used with synthetic-based mud or some specialized fluid systems.

8. As much as possible, flow from the well (bell nipple) should be evenly distributed
among all the shakers.

The body of the tank is made by welding the steel plate and section, using the smooth cone-shape structure or the corrugated structure.

Compartment

A tank is sectioned off into different compartments. A compartment may include a settling tank, sometimes called a sand trap, to allow sand and other solids in the drilling fluid to precipitate before it flows into the next compartment.


Other compartments may have agitators on the top, which have long impellers below inserting into the tank and stirring the fluids to prevent its contents from precipitating. And mud guns are often equipped at the corners of the tanks' top, spraying high-pressed mud to prevent the drilling fluids in the corner of the compartment from precipitating, typically for the square tanks.

4 reasons are accounted for shale shaker screen getting premature damaged

How to avoid premature damage of your shaker screen ,you need to follow 4 points listed below.



1: Problem:

Tension strength of shale shaker screen mesh is inadequate: Screen mesh is rolled up for easy transportation and storage in many cases,this will cause pressure stress on mesh inside ,tensile stress outside,furthermore, long time use will loosen the screen mesh , lessen tension strength,leading to unexpected vibration,eventually screen mesh get broken off or partly sunken.

Solution: 

Enhance the tension strength of screen wire,keep screen surface leveled to reduce the pressure stress
2. Problem:

There are metal and non-metal material of it,including,low-carbon,high-carbon,high manganese steel,stainless steel etc,non-metal material including: rubber , nylon, polyurethane.If user choose not right material ,premature wear would happen.

Solution: 

User should choose corresponding screen material according to mud physical property,high manganese steel is a durable material.The embed knitting method of screen mesh gives screen surface balanced pressure,and cross over point without bump,it has better working performance and longer working time.

Problem:

Feeding material has high stickiness.If feeding material has high humidity and viscid,it will tightly be attached to screen mesh, heaped up on the mesh surface,leading to screen mesh damage.

Solution:

Speed up the amplitude of shaker screen,and adjust shaker deck angle,or change mesh size to solve the problem.

Problem:

Too much material feeding into shale shaker at one time.Too much feeding material beyond shaker screen's processing capacity will cause damage to the screen mesh.

Solution:

Successive and equally feeding to shaker screen is suggested,always avoid too much material feeding at one time. There can be added an surge hopper to lessen the impact force feeding material brings to screen mesh. With this method,the working life of screen mesh can be prolonged.
